The organized costume crawls anchor the district. Old Town's bar crawls run two nights — Saturday, October 24 and Halloween itself, Saturday, October 31 — with wristband access across five-plus venues and costume contests carrying serious prize money.

Around them, the district does what it does best. The clubs run late, the patios stay full, and Scottsdale Road turns into a slow-moving costume parade whether anyone organized one or not.

Doing that on foot is fine. Doing it across a district that stretches well beyond comfortable walking distance, in costume, in the dark, is a different story.

• Old Town garages fill by 8 p.m. and the surface lots go earlier.
• Rideshare surge on Halloween Saturday is the worst of the calendar year — worse than New Year's Eve, because everyone leaves at the same time.
